Ian Somerhalder has opened up about a difficult financial chapter in his life with his wife, Nikki Reed, revealing that a failed business venture left them with a massive debt that took years to escape.

“Eight figures is a hard hole to climb out of,” he said. “But Nikki and I did it. You know, she really negotiated us out of this deal, but we sold houses, paintings, cars, watches, everything.”

Somerhalder also admitted that the outcome felt especially painful given his long career in television. “I mean, I should have been retiring off of one of the biggest TV shows in the world,” he said.

Despite the setback, both he and Reed worked together to rebuild their financial life. Today, they are involved in several business projects. One of their ventures includes a wellness-focused company, and Somerhalder has also stepped into the spirits industry alongside former co-star Paul Wesley.

The couple, who married in 2015, now live a quieter life outside Los Angeles with their two children. Somerhalder has also spoken about how they juggle family life with entrepreneurship, saying, “We’re building three companies at the same time, raising kids,”

In another reflection on his journey, he noted, “I loved what I did for a really long time. I don’t miss any of it. I love making films, and I just did it for so long. We had an amazing run.”
