‘Widows Bay’ Episode 9 Promo Teases a Centuries-Old Storm and a Card Game Nobody Asked For
Apple TV has been on a quiet winning streak with prestige horror lately, and ‘Widow’s Bay’ has become its most compelling argument for why the streamer deserves to be in the conversation.
Since its premiere, the series has built a loyal and increasingly fervent audience around its darkly comic portrait of a cursed New England island town, earning the kind of critical adoration that gets people talking. Now, with just two episodes left in its first season, the promotional machinery is already teasing what comes next, and it sounds gloriously bleak.
New promotional images were released for the show, alongside the official synopsis for the upcoming episode. The visuals are striking, featuring what appears to be a card from an in-world game called “RUN,” described on the card itself as an action card game for two to six players, alongside an image of a running rabbit radiating a burst of frantic energy.
The imagery perfectly captures the show’s blend of dry, deadpan wit and genuine unease that has made it such a standout.
The description for Episode 9, titled “Emergency Shelter,” reads exactly as it appears in the promotional material. Following the slasher chaos of Episode 8, a supernatural, centuries-old storm grounds the ferries and knocks out the island’s power, leaving the survivors trapped in a tense lockdown where they play an intense card game to pass the time. The official synopsis, presented with the show’s trademark sardonic tourist-brochure voice, simply says, “Please seek shelter should a centuries-old storm rage toward the island and plunge us into darkness. Enjoy a card game.”
The episode arrives at a fascinating moment for the series. On Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Widow’s Bay’ holds an approval rating of 97% based on 76 reviews, with an average rating of 8.5 out of 10. The site’s critics consensus reads that creator Katie Dippold “successfully continues to invest in eccentricity with this outlandish horror-comedy that stokes the genre’s well-worn tropes to winning effect, bringing scares, laughs, and a game cast.” That kind of sustained critical momentum heading into the final stretch is exactly the kind of word-of-mouth fuel that turns a buzzy new show into a genuine cultural moment.

The show is set on a quaint island town 40 miles off the coast of New England, where Mayor Tom Loftis is desperate to revive his struggling community despite contending with superstitious locals who believe the island is cursed. He eventually succeeds in attracting tourists, but the locals were right, and after decades of calm, the old stories start happening again.
Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys leads the cast as Mayor Tom Loftis, with Kate O’Flynn as his eccentric assistant Patricia, Kevin Carroll as Sheriff Bechir Clemmons, Dale Dickey as Rosemary, and Kingston Rumi Southwick as Tom’s rebellious teenage son Evan. Stephen Root rounds out the ensemble. The series was created by Katie Dippold and directed across multiple episodes by Hiro Murai, who also serves as executive producer.
Episode 9 of ‘Widow’s Bay’ is scheduled to release on Wednesday, June 10, on Apple TV. The season finale follows the week after, on June 17, giving the show a tight, focused runway to land its ending. Whether that ending justifies the extraordinary buildup is the only question left, and based on everything the show has delivered so far, expectations are very high.
