Worldwide Summer Hit Movie Breaks Netflix Record with 15 Weeks in Top 10
“KPop Demon Hunters” is continuing its reign on Netflix, breaking new records with every passing week.
The animated musical fantasy from Sony Pictures Animation has now spent 15 straight weeks on Netflix’s Top 10 chart for English-language films, setting a new record. The previous record holder, “Red Notice,” spent 14 total weeks on the list, but only 12 of those were consecutive.
The movie hasn’t just stayed on the chart, it’s dominated it. Eight of the 15 weeks were spent at number one, and the other seven at number two. Even in its 15th week, the film drew 19.3 million views, nearly twice as many as the second-place title, “Ruth & Boaz,” which debuted with 10.3 million views.
Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have hinted that the story of “KPop Demon Hunters” is far from finished.
Kang told Screen Rant that there are still many unanswered questions in the movie’s universe and that some character backstories, like those of Mira and Zoey, could be explored in future projects. Appelhans added to People that the story has “so many unanswered questions… and so many avenues that could be their own story.”
According to Matthew Belloni of Puck, Sony has the contractual right to make future installments, which would go directly to Netflix. A theatrical release seems unlikely under the current agreement.
Netflix is reportedly looking into several follow-ups, including two sequels, a TV series, a short film, and even a stage musical. Dan Lin, chairman of Netflix Films, told Newsweek, “We are excited to explore what could be the next adventure for [Huntr/x]. [KPop Demon Hunters’] success comes from its original, fresh story so if we do embark on a sequel, we would want to take our time to make sure that any future stories we tell with our favorite demon hunters retain the flair and uniqueness of the first film.”
Reports in August from The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Sony is in talks with Netflix to develop an animated sequel, and negotiations with Kang and Appelhans are just getting started. Fans are eagerly anticipating more adventures from this universe, which has quickly become one of Netflix’s most beloved animated hits.
In my opinion, the success of “KPop Demon Hunters” proves that original, creative storytelling can really shine on streaming platforms. The combination of music, action, and strong characters has clearly struck a chord with viewers. I’m excited to see how Netflix and Sony build on this world while keeping the charm of the first movie.
