‘X-Men’ Reboot Star Samara Weaving Shares a Photo Reading Emma Frost Comics in a Bikini
Marvel Studios wasted no time building buzz for its long-awaited ‘X-Men’ reboot once the cast was officially unveiled at D23 this past weekend. Samara Weaving’s casting as Emma Frost stood out as one of the panel’s most talked-about reveals, giving the ‘Ready or Not’ star her first major entry into the superhero genre after years of headlining horror and dark comedy projects that built her reputation as one of the genre’s most dependable scream queens.
That excitement has only grown since the announcement, fueled largely by Weaving’s own social media activity in the days since. The actress shared a poolside Instagram photo showing her flipping through a stack of comics while sunbathing, captioning the post “Don’t read into it,” a wink that hasn’t stopped fans from doing exactly that given the timing.
The comics visible in Weaving’s photos weren’t random back issues. The stack included Emma Frost’s various solo series, along with material from the character’s Astonishing X-Men and Krakoan Age-era Hellfire Gala storylines, giving fans a genuine glimpse into which corners of the character’s decades-long history she may be studying for the role. Weaving also shared a separate panel from the classic Chris Claremont-era comics depicting Emma in her original Hellfire Club incarnation as the White Queen, complete with cape and corset, overseeing a scene involving unconscious captives being loaded onto a hovercraft.
Emma Frost’s comic-book origins as a villain make that particular panel notable. Introduced in 1980 as a supervillain and foe of the X-Men, Frost spent years as the Hellfire Club’s White Queen before eventually evolving into one of the team’s most central leaders and members. That trajectory, from antagonist to ally, gives Weaving’s research a clear throughline, suggesting the film may lean into Emma’s more morally complicated, villain-adjacent origins before shifting toward heroism.
Weaving isn’t the only newly cast X-Man addressing the announcement publicly. Maya Boyd, revealed as the film’s new Storm, also broke her silence following the reveal, writing simply that it’s an honor to take on the role. Director Jake Schreier, known for helming ‘Thunderbolts*,’ is leading the project, which also includes Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, and Inde Navarrette as Rogue.
In the comics, Emma is an immensely powerful telepath whose secondary mutation allows her to transform her body into organic diamond, granting her near invulnerability in that state. She’s also historically been one of Cyclops’s most significant romantic interests, famously drawing him away from Jean Grey during Grant Morrison’s celebrated New X-Men run, a dynamic that could carry real weight given Kit Connor and Sadie Sink are both confirmed for the film as Cyclops and Jean Grey respectively.
Notably, while Emma is American in the comics, she’s traditionally depicted speaking with a deliberate English accent as a stylistic affectation, a detail that could factor into how Weaving approaches the role if the film stays faithful to that characterization.
With casting now locked in and fans already combing through every hint dropped online, anticipation for Marvel’s take on the character is only building heading into the film’s May 5, 2028 release date.
