‘Yellowstone’ Creator Taylor Sheridan Reveals the Strict Conditions He Set Before Paramount’s Decade of Success
Taylor Sheridan has become one of the most powerful creators in television, helping turn Paramount’s TV lineup into one of the biggest success stories of the last decade. But before his shows became major hits, Sheridan had to set clear rules about how he wanted to work.
During a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, as reported by Deadline, Sheridan opened up about the conditions he placed before starting his successful creative partnership with Paramount. The writer and producer explained that having full creative control was one of the most important parts of any deal he made.
Sheridan became known for writing his own scripts and creating stories in his own unique style. Unlike many television creators who work with large writing teams, Sheridan has often taken a more personal approach by writing much of his material himself. That freedom became a key part of his success, but it was something he had to demand early in his career.
Before moving into television, Sheridan built his reputation through movies. He wrote three connected films that explored similar themes and characters, creating what many fans consider a spiritual trilogy. One of those movies, Hell or High Water, earned Sheridan an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
After his success in film, Sheridan moved into television and developed a strong partnership with Paramount. That relationship helped create some of the biggest shows in recent years, including Yellowstone, Landman, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Lioness.
Speaking about his creative process on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan explained that he was never focused on awards or trying to impress critics. Instead, he wanted to tell stories that connected with everyday viewers.
“This is not a democracy. There’s no committee. You’re going to pay me, and you’re going to give me a bunch of money, and I’m going to deliver you these shows,” Sheridan said. He also described himself as someone who tells stories about ordinary people and experiences that audiences can understand.
“I’m pretty common, and I’m going to tell stories that common people are going to understand. That’s most of America,” he added.
That approach has clearly worked. Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe became a major television success, with the original series becoming one of the most talked-about dramas on television. The franchise expanded with shows such as 1883 and 1923, while more projects connected to the Yellowstone world continue to move forward.
Beyond Yellowstone, Sheridan has helped build a large lineup of successful Paramount+ series. His current and upcoming projects include new seasons of Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and The Madison. He has also remained involved as an executive producer on additional Yellowstone-related projects.
According to Collider, Sheridan’s work played a major role in helping Paramount+ grow over the past several years. His shows have consistently attracted strong audiences and helped establish the platform as a major competitor in the streaming space.
However, after nearly a decade working with Paramount, Sheridan is now preparing for a new creative partnership with NBCUniversal. While his next chapter will take him in a different direction, the impact of his time at Paramount is already clear.
By demanding creative freedom and staying focused on stories that connect with a wide audience, Sheridan built a successful formula that changed the way modern television dramas are made.
