Zach Cregger Just Revealed New Details About the ‘Weapons’ Prequel, and We Are Hyped

Horror sequels rarely generate this much genuine anticipation, but ‘Weapons‘ managed to create one of the most talked-about villains in recent memory almost overnight. Between its unconventional structure and a genuinely unsettling central antagonist, the film became one of last year’s most surprising theatrical successes.

Cregger explained that deliberately avoiding her backstory in the original film was intentional, noting that keeping her mysterious was central to how ‘Weapons’ functioned as a story. That choice, he suggested, is exactly what makes exploring her origins in a standalone feature feel like such a natural next step rather than an unnecessary cash grab.

The project, currently carrying the working title ‘Gladys,’ has been in development at New Line Cinema since shortly after ‘Weapons’ hit theaters and became one of the year’s most talked-about horror releases. Cregger is writing the script alongside Zach Shields, known for his work on the Monsterverse franchise, with both credited as the primary architects of Gladys’ expanded story.

That collaboration traces back even further than the prequel’s official announcement. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger had actually written a chapter focused on Gladys’ backstory for the original ‘Weapons’ script, only to cut it for length before the film’s release, meaning much of this new material may draw directly from ideas he had already developed years earlier.

Cregger also promised the upcoming film will carry the same kind of unpredictable energy that made the first movie stand out, telling the crowd it will include just as many twists and turns as ‘Weapons’ itself. Given how unconventional the original film’s structure already was, that comparison sets a high bar for the prequel to clear.

The film’s release date has also already been locked in, with Cregger confirming at CinemaCon earlier this year that ‘Gladys’ is scheduled to hit theaters through New Line on September 8, 2028. That timeline places it several years out, giving the writing team plenty of room to shape the story before production even begins.

‘Weapons’ itself grossed over $270 million worldwide following its release last summer, cementing Cregger as one of the industry’s most in-demand filmmakers working in horror today. Madigan’s performance as Gladys ultimately earned her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, further validating just how central her character became to the film’s overall success.

Whether Madigan herself will return for the prequel remains an open question, with the actress previously deflecting the idea by simply telling fans to figure it out themselves. Given how essential her performance was to making Gladys such a compelling figure in the first place, her potential involvement is likely to remain one of the most closely watched details as the project moves forward.
