Video game adaptations have a rough track record when it comes to actually capturing what made the source material special in the first place, and horror properties face an even steeper climb given how much of their power comes from pacing and dread rather than plot alone. Zach Cregger, fresh off the critical success of ‘Weapons’ and ‘Barbarian,’ has spent months making the case that his upcoming ‘Resident Evil’ reboot understands that distinction.

Rather than adapting a specific storyline from the franchise’s nine mainline games, Cregger built an entirely original narrative while borrowing structural elements from across the series to capture what actually makes the games feel like ‘Resident Evil.’ That approach has meant pulling inspiration from very different corners of Capcom’s catalog, depending on whether he’s talking about pacing or character.

Cregger recently laid out exactly which entries shaped his thinking most directly, naming ‘Resident Evil 4‘ and ‘Resident Evil 7’ as the two games that gave him the most inspiration while developing his movie. He explained wanting to borrow the rhythm and scale of the fourth game while pulling character elements from the seventh, blending two very different eras of the franchise into a single cinematic approach.

Cregger has been fairly explicit in past interviews about what draws him to the fourth game specifically. Speaking with Deadline, he described wanting to capture the games’ naturally cinematic flow, explaining that the movie moves from one set piece to another, with each location containing its own unique threat, calling that structure something the games do exceptionally well.

That structural philosophy extends directly into how the film escalates over its runtime. According to reporting from Rolling Stone Philippines, Cregger changes the film’s environment roughly every seven to eight minutes to mirror the way the games shift between levels, while protagonist Bryan’s available weaponry grows more powerful as the story progresses, echoing the classic pistol-to-shotgun-to-machine-gun arc familiar to longtime players.

The character influence tells a different story. In a Q&A with PlayStation Blog, Cregger drew a direct line between his lead character and Ethan Winters, the everyman protagonist introduced in ‘Resident Evil 7: Biohazard,’ contrasting him with more traditionally trained series heroes like Leon Kennedy. He described his own lead, Bryan, as a normal guy who isn’t particularly good at combat in any way, someone athletic but not an athlete, just a good-natured, hapless dude who gets pulled into a nightmare.

That choice to sideline combat-trained heroes in favor of an ordinary civilian thrust into chaos gives the film its emotional throughline, according to Cregger, who has said he wanted moviegoers to experience the story the way an average player might feel dropped into the game for the first time rather than following a seasoned action hero.

Blending the mechanical intensity of ‘Resident Evil 4’ with the vulnerable, untrained perspective of ‘Resident Evil 7′ gives Cregger’s reboot a structural identity distinct from both the earlier Milla Jovovich-led film series and the games’ own mainline storylines. It’s a deliberate departure that has already generated plenty of discussion among longtime fans watching to see whether an original story can still feel authentically ‘Resident Evil.’

With the film starring Austin Abrams as Bryan alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, and shot for IMAX release, Cregger’s take arrives in theaters on September 18. Whether his blend of two very different games translates into the dread-filled experience he’s promising remains to be seen once audiences get their hands on it.

Do you think blending Resident Evil 4’s action with Resident Evil 7’s vulnerable protagonist is the right approach?
