Zack Snyder’s Tribute to Autumn Shows a Father’s Love Outlasting ‘Justice League’
Few filmmakers have let personal loss shape their public legacy as openly as Zack Snyder, and few directors can count on a fan base as devoted as his. For years, the story of his daughter Autumn has been woven into the story of his work, especially ‘Justice League’.
Autumn Snyder died by suicide on March 12, 2017, at age 20. Her death came while her father was directing ‘Justice League’, and he and his wife, producer Deborah Snyder, stepped away from the project to focus on their family.
Autumn studied writing at Sarah Lawrence College and shared her father’s love of superheroes. Snyder has said that after losing her, he no longer had the will to fight Warner Bros. over the film. Joss Whedon took over, and the 2017 release flopped.
Nearly a decade on, Snyder, 60, has remembered her again. This week, he shared an Instagram image of a smiling Autumn posing with Henry Cavill in his Superman costume, along with a caption about the heartbreak of losing a child. He wrote that the love, the memories and the longing never fade, and that Autumn will always be loved and always be a part of everything he does.
The post also came with a call to action. The Snyder family will take part in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk in Pasadena, California, on Saturday, November 7, as Team Ironwill. Snyder urged followers to donate to support suicide prevention research, education and family support.
The team’s fundraiser page echoes the sentiment of the tribute, noting that Autumn’s absence is something the family feels daily. It also says they walk for Autumn, for themselves and for anyone silently struggling. With the walk now just 1 day away, the timing makes the message feel even more urgent. Autumn’s birthday, November 27, is also only weeks off.
The choice of image is not random. Autumn had an uncredited role as a panicked civilian in the 2013 action movie ‘Man of Steel’, which starred Cavill as Superman. Placing her beside the Man of Steel ties her to the world her father built on screen.
That connection runs even deeper in his biggest creative statement. After years of fan campaigning, the four-hour ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ arrived on HBO Max in March 2021, and it was dedicated to Autumn. The film closes on the words “For Autumn” while a cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, performed by Allison Crowe, plays over the credits.
That song was chosen because it was Autumn’s favorite, and it was also played at her funeral. For many viewers, those final minutes turned a superhero epic into something far more personal.
This is not the first time Snyder has paused to remember her publicly. In 2022, he marked the 5-year anniversary of the theatrical ‘Justice League’ with a tribute to Autumn, and in 2023, he thanked the community that continues to honor her legacy on what would have been her 27th birthday.
Snyder’s supporters have a long history of turning that dedication into action. The fan community had raised more than $1.1 million for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention as of 2023, and Snyder has also hosted charity screenings of his DC films with proceeds going to the same cause. At the Hollywood Critics Association Film Awards, he accepted the first-ever Valiant Award and credited fans’ mental health fundraising.
Fans have responded to the latest tribute with messages of remembrance, including the #ForAutumn hashtag. Snyder only joined Instagram in late 2025, and he has since shared plenty of nostalgic mementos from his DC years, but few have felt as personal as this one.
