‘9-1-1’ Season 10 Episode 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Does Athena Escape the Lava Tunnels?
Every autumn, ‘9-1-1′ tries to top its last disaster, and this year the ground itself turned on Los Angeles. The ‘9-1-1’ recap and ending explained is the burning question after “Fire in the Hole” turned downtown into a river of molten rock. It’s a chaotic hour that tests nearly every member of the 118.
The premiere, which aired October 15, opened with a collapsing highway and closed with lava bursting from the ruins. Athena was left seemingly trapped underground after following a jewelry store lead into a tunnel. The official synopsis for the follow-up promised the 118 evacuating trapped citizens, Athena running into a familiar face and Maddie facing an impossible decision.
All of that arrives at full volume, starting with the volcano already erupting and spewing debris and lava on everyone. Director Worrell, the man in charge of the city’s emergency services, is killed by falling debris. With him gone, nobody knows who’s in charge, and the team can’t even call for backup.
Traffic piles up across the city, and drivers abandon their cars and flee on foot as lava begins pooling around them. Chimney and Maddie come up with a plan that is basically a game of Floor Is Lava. People are told to climb onto the roofs of their cars while rescuers slowly work through the crowd.
One man refuses to wait. He jumps from car to car, falls into the lava and dies, a death that scares everyone who witnessed it into listening.
Elsewhere, Buck pulls off a daring rescue of a pregnant woman, basically swinging her over the lava to safety. Harry and Hen also respond to an apartment building, where a woman hit by a lava rock refuses treatment so the firefighters can help people who can still be saved. Hen leaves, but Harry stays so she doesn’t have to die alone.
With Worrell dead and everyone else refusing responsibility, Maddie suddenly finds herself running the emergency response. Her call center is overwhelmed with panicked callers, some even asking whether the whole thing is a hoax. She makes a tough call for mutual aid, which reportedly costs $40 million.
The hardest moment comes when the situation keeps getting worse and she must decide which part of the city to save first. Tearfully, she makes a choice, knowing she looked at every possibility and tried to make the most informed call for the city and its residents. It effectively means deciding which neighborhood burns.

At the hospital, May and her co-worker are overrun with patients from the volcano. After a groom covered in burns starts passing out in front of her, May has a panic attack and cries on the bathroom floor. She also botches an IV, getting blood everywhere, and the head nurse benches her.
By the end of the hour, she returns to the floor and is doing much better. It’s a small, human beat in an episode otherwise dominated by spectacle.
Underground, Athena hears a voice behind a pile of rubble, crawls through and finds a man named Harvey and rookie cop Matthew Sparks (Zach Tinker). Matthew tries to apologize for the woman he shot earlier, but Athena isn’t having it, since he never contacted the woman while Athena has. The trio realizes they’ve been walking in circles through collapsing tunnels.
Things get worse when Harvey’s head injury turns out to be more serious than expected, and he forgets who Athena is. Nobody knows the three of them are missing, and Athena even runs into a group of rats on the way. By the end of the episode, Athena is still trapped near lava with two men she barely knows, so she remains alive but not out.

The episode doesn’t resolve Athena’s fate, so the premiere’s cliffhanger carries straight through. Her tense reunion with Matthew gives the tunnel story an emotional edge beyond simple survival. The wider lesson of the hour is that bravery isn’t always easy to maintain, whether you’re Buck, Maddie, Harry or May.
Will Athena escape the lava tunnels?
