Paramount Confirms It’s Bringing One of Gaming’s Biggest Franchises to the Big Screen!
Paramount Pictures is teaming up with Activision, the company behind the “Call of Duty” video game series, to make a live-action movie.
The film will be based on the world of the game, which includes more than 30 main games since the first one came out in 2003. The financial details of the deal have not been shared.
Variety reports that while the current plan is for a single blockbuster movie, the agreement could eventually lead to more projects.
Paramount may expand the “Call of Duty” universe across both films and television, giving the franchise a bigger presence on screen.
There aren’t any details yet about the movie’s story. The games are mainly first-person shooter titles with military themes. Some entries, like the “Black Ops” series from developer Treyarch, have connected stories and characters. Treyarch is set to release “Black Ops 7” later this year, keeping the franchise in the spotlight.
The “Call of Duty” deal follows major moves by Paramount after its $8 billion merger with Skydance, led by David Ellison. Since the merger, Paramount has attracted the Duffer Brothers, creators of “Stranger Things,” from Netflix and also paid $7.7 billion for exclusive rights to UFC events for seven years.
Ellison, who is Paramount’s chairman and CEO, shared his excitement about the project. “As a lifelong fan of ‘Call of Duty’ this is truly a dream come true,” he said. “From the first Allied campaigns in the original ‘Call of Duty,’ through ‘Modern Warfare’ and ‘Black Ops,’ I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”
Activision president Rob Kostich also commented on the partnership. “Throughout its history, ‘Call of Duty’ has captured our imagination with incredible action and intense stories that have brought millions of people together from around the world, and that focus on making incredible ‘Call of Duty’ games remains unwavering,” he said.
“With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started.”
According to journalist Mathew Belloni, Paramount initially planned to release a “Street Fighter” movie as part of its new deal with Legendary Pictures. However, sources say that “Call of Duty” has now become an even higher priority for Ellison and studio heads Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.
No directors or actors have been attached yet. The adaptation of a first-person shooter game is expected to be challenging, but Paramount is focused on bringing popular gaming stories to younger audiences.
This move shows that Paramount is serious about turning popular video games into big-screen hits. Personally, I think a “Call of Duty” movie could be exciting if done well, but adapting a first-person shooter won’t be easy. What do you think about this project?
