Netflix Finds Writer for Live-Action Version of Hit Anime
Netflix and Legendary are pushing forward with their live-action version of My Hero Academia.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Fuchs has been chosen to write the script. Fuchs has worked on major films like Wonder Woman and Argylle and will now bring his storytelling to one of the most successful manga series in the world.
The project has been in development for years, and Japanese filmmaker Shinsuke Sato remains set to direct.
Sato is well known for adapting manga into live-action films, including Bleach and Kingdom.
My Hero Academia is a story set in a world where nearly everyone has powers, called quirks. It follows a boy born without any abilities who dreams of becoming a hero. His life changes when the world’s greatest hero sees potential in him and passes on his powers. From there, he enters a special school for heroes, whose motto is plus ultra, meaning “push beyond.”
The manga series began in 2014 in the popular magazine Shonen Jump. Since then, it has grown into a global franchise with anime seasons, films, merchandise, and more. Over 100 million copies of the manga are said to be in circulation, putting it among the top-selling titles ever.
Anime has become a major focus for Netflix in recent years THR reports, as the medium continues to grow worldwide. Adding My Hero Academia to its lineup shows how serious the platform is about reaching fans of Japanese entertainment.
Outside this film, Jason Fuchs is busy with other projects. He is co-creator and showrunner of It: Welcome to Derry, an upcoming HBO prequel series to Stephen King’s It.
He also has acting credits in films like It: Chapter Two and La La Land, and will appear in A24 and Peacock’s Crystal Lake, a prequel to Friday the 13th.
Netflix has had mixed results with anime adaptations in the past, but with a strong writer like Fuchs and an experienced director like Sato, this could be the version that fans have been waiting for. My Hero Academia is a massive franchise, and the pressure to deliver will be high. What do you think about Netflix adapting this story into live action? Share your thoughts in the comments.
