Fans won’t have to wait much longer to stream Superman without paying for a rental. Director James Gunn revealed that the new Superman film will be available on HBO Max starting Friday, September 19.

The movie reached theaters just over two months ago and quickly earned $615 million worldwide.

While the box office numbers were strong, many expected even higher returns. For viewers who don’t want to spend $19.99 to rent the film on Prime Video, HBO Max will make it free to watch. Gunn’s announcement comes from his official social media and interviews, making it the first confirmation of the streaming date.

“This puts the film on HBO Max just a little over two months after its theatrical release,” the director noted.

The quick streaming release ties into the new season of Peacemaker, which has connections to Superman’s story. With the film now more accessible, fans of the show can easily catch up and see how the movie links to the series.

Superman is a reboot of the classic superhero franchise and the first movie in the new DC Universe. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent/Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and supporting performances by Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. Gunn wrote and directed the film, while he and Peter Safran produced it under DC Studios.

The story follows Superman as he deals with the fallout of intervening in an international conflict created by Luthor.

Development on a new Superman movie began after the plans for a Man of Steel sequel were shelved. Gunn started working on the project in 2022, becoming co-CEO of DC Studios in 2023 with Safran.

The film was influenced by the comic book All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. Filming took place mainly at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and also on location in Norway, Georgia, and Ohio, wrapping up in July 2024.

Superman premiered at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7 before opening widely in U.S. theaters on July 11. The film received mostly positive reviews, with critics praising its colorful tone, fun approach, and strong performances from Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult. Some critics mentioned it felt overstuffed at times, but overall, it was well received.

The next installment in the DCU, titled Man of Tomorrow, is already scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.
