John Boyega Reveals His Dream Version of the Star Wars Sequels, Perfectly Aligning With What Fans Have Been Asking For
At Florida Supercon 2025, John Boyega gave fans a rare look at how he would have handled the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
The actor, who played Finn in the films, didn’t hold back when asked what he would change about The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.
Fans were often frustrated with the sequels because the story felt inconsistent across the three movies. Each director had a different vision, which led to plot points and character arcs that didn’t always match.
Many new characters, including Finn, Rey, and Poe, were introduced but didn’t get enough development. Finn, in particular, was set up as a major hero but ended up sidelined in the story.
Boyega explained that if he had been a producer from the start, the trilogy would have been very different. “If I was a producer on Star Wars from the beginning, you would have had a whole completely different thing,” he told the audience, according to Popverse.
He said the original trilogy characters would still be honored. “First of all, we’re not getting rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people. We’re not doing that. The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton.”
The actor also criticized how the new heroes were handled. “Our new characters will not be OP’d in these movies. They won’t just grab stuff and know what to do with it. No. You’ve got to struggle like every other character in this franchise. I’d do that,” he said. Boyega wants the heroes to face real challenges rather than feeling overpowered.
He also shared that he would have pulled more from Star Wars lore. “I’d look to the Old Republic stories and see what we can add to the continuation of that. I would definitely want to see Force Unleashed stories in there. I would try to expand the Star Wars universe as much as possible while respecting the lore. If we’re expanding the lore, we have to do it within the respective boundaries that stay true,” he said.
Boyega was particularly critical of Luke Skywalker’s arc in The Last Jedi. “But Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock. Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those characters way more, way more,” he said, emphasizing the need to respect the legacy of original characters.
Boyega’s ideas show how the sequel trilogy could have balanced the original heroes with new characters like Finn, giving everyone more meaningful growth and stronger story arcs. His vision suggests a trilogy that stays true to the Star Wars universe while giving fans the satisfying character development many felt was missing.
This candid look at Boyega’s take on the sequels offers fans hope for a version of Star Wars that might have done justice to both the old and new generations.
