The search for the next James Bond is officially underway, and director Denis Villeneuve will lead the casting once he finishes working on Dune: Part Three.

Fans have been waiting since Daniel Craig’s final Bond film, No Time To Die, released in 2021. According to sources familiar with the project, Villeneuve and his team are looking for a fresh actor to take on the iconic 007 role.

Amazon now has full creative control of the franchise, bringing in a new team to shape the next Bond movie.

Producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal are guiding the project. Pascal has a strong track record, having worked on the Spider-Man movies and previously produced Casino Royale. Steven Knight, known for creating Peaky Blinders, is writing the script.

While rumors have linked names like Tom Holland, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and even Glen Powell to the role, Deadline says the team wants a British actor. “Yes, they want a Brit to play Bond,” a source confirmed.

Villeneuve and the producers are reportedly focusing on an unknown actor, likely in his late 20s to early 30s, who fits Ian Fleming’s description of Bond as a “blunt instrument,” a lethal, straightforward man who reacts to the world around him. This approach rules out older actors such as Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, or Henry Cavill.

The character of Bond in this new film will not continue directly from No Time To Die, where the previous Bond died. Instead, sources say the movie will present a fresh start.

“It’s a new Bond, a new start, a fresh everything,” one insider explained. Steven Knight’s script may explore Bond’s early years as a Royal Navy Commander before he joins MI6, showing how he became 007.

The casting process has already drawn many applicants. “Every name you’ve heard of, and many you’ve never heard of,” a source said.

However, the real search for the new Bond won’t begin until Villeneuve finishes his work on Dune: Part Three. There is also the possibility for diversity in casting, with the final choice focused on who fits the role and the story rather than other factors.

Villeneuve, Knight, and the producers aim to create a Bond who is physically imposing, capable of handling action scenes, and embodies the essence of Fleming’s original character. The team is looking for someone who can carry a new era of 007 while staying true to the spy’s roots.

Starting fresh with a new team and a new actor is the right move. It gives the franchise a chance to reinvent itself without being weighed down by past storylines. I’m curious to see who will become the next Bond and how the character will evolve. What do you think about the direction Villeneuve and the team are taking for Bond 26?
