Colin Farrell Teases ‘The Batman: Part 2’ as Darker, Deeper, and Scarier

Colin Farrell is ready to return as the Penguin in The Batman: Part II, and he’s promising fans a darker and scarier ride than the first movie. The sequel, directed and co-written by Matt Reeves alongside Mattson Tomlin, is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

Farrell first captured audiences as the Penguin in 2022’s The Batman, a role he described as a dream come true. “That child in Dublin who used to draw Batman signals on his jeans,” he said, “was so excited when I got the script.” At first, Farrell admits he didn’t fully understand Reeves’ vision. “I read it and was like ‘I’ve only got five scenes,’ and I thought he was a bit silly, a bit of a putz,” he told reporters.

It wasn’t until Reeves showed him the mockup of the Penguin in full makeup that everything clicked. “The first time I saw it, the cogs crunched. Everything in the script became clear. Every little pockmark. The character was ferocious looking, but I could imagine every aspect of the character’s life,” Farrell explained.

The role became strong enough to inspire HBO’s spin-off, The Penguin, where Farrell could fully explore the character. “I can do five hours a day riffing as the Penguin, and even my sense of humor changes. I’d call my kids in character,” he added.

Looking ahead to The Batman: Part II, Farrell says his role will be smaller, but the story itself is bigger and more intense. “I’ve got an even smaller role in this one. But I’m OK with that…I’ve read the script, from start to finish, and I can’t say much about it. But it’s deeper, scarier, the stakes are bigger. I’m really excited to see it,” he shared.

The sequel will continue exploring Gotham City after the events of the first film and the aftermath seen in The Penguin spin-off.

Production had been delayed by Hollywood strikes and Reeves’ work on perfecting the script, which was completed in June of this year. Filming is now scheduled to begin in late April or early May 2026 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England.

Farrell’s return promises fans a familiar yet more intense version of the Penguin, set against the backdrop of a city filled with corruption and danger.
