Robert De Niro’s recent films have struggled at the box office, signaling that the legendary actor may no longer be the guaranteed draw he once was.

According to industry reports and box office trackers, his last five movies have collectively lost millions for their respective studios.

Starting with Ezra (2023), the film did not manage to turn a profit. Rotten Tomatoes shows that 69% of 89 critics gave it a positive review, with an average rating of 6.3/10. The site’s consensus reads, “Good performances give Ezra a resonant emotional core even when its script strains credulity, balancing out into a solid family drama.” Metacritic gave it a score of 57 out of 100, signaling mixed reviews.

Despite this, the movie lost $7 million overall.

About My Father (2023) faced an even bigger loss, with estimates suggesting it lost $40 million.

The comedy grossed $12.1 million in the United States and Canada and $6.1 million internationally, totaling $18.2 million worldwide. Its opening weekend fell short of expectations, debuting at $4.3 million and finishing sixth. The film dropped 52% in its second weekend, according to box office reports.

The star’s latest action film, Tin Soldier (2025), also struggled, reportedly losing $45 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, only 9% of 11 critics gave it a positive review.

Leslie Felperin of The Guardian wrote, “This action thriller is a mangled, dreary, unlovely mess and so much less than the sum of its parts – despite relatively blameless supporting turns from Robert De Niro and John Leguizamo.”

The Alto Knights (2025) suffered the largest reported loss among his recent films, losing $35 million.

As of April 2025, it had earned $6.1 million in the U.S. and $3.5 million internationally. Variety noted that Warner Bros. was expected to lose around $110 million when combining this movie with another flop, Mickey 17. The film’s opening weekend fell in line with projections, but its second weekend saw a 65% drop, and it was quickly removed from most theaters.

Even critically acclaimed films weren’t immune. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) was praised and earned numerous award nominations, but financially it still faced setbacks.

The movie grossed $158.8 million worldwide, but Variety reported that it would have needed $500–600 million under a traditional release to break even. Apple covered part of the gap with home rentals, but the film’s net loss is estimated around $215 million, according to Deadline Hollywood.

These recent trends suggest that even an actor of De Niro’s stature cannot always guarantee box office success. While he continues to take on challenging and diverse roles, audience turnout has not matched expectations.
