“David Chase, Creator of The Sopranos, Is Back at HBO with a New Limited Series” – Here’s What We Know
David Chase, the mind behind The Sopranos, is returning to HBO with a new limited series called Project: MKUltra.
This will be his first series since the legendary mob drama, and it promises to explore one of the most secretive and controversial programs in CIA history.
The series will be adapted from the nonfiction book Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA, and the Tragedy of MKUltra by John Lisle.
Chase has optioned the book and will write the adaptation himself under his company Riverain Pictures’ first-look deal with HBO. Nicole Lambert, Head of Production and Development at Riverain, will executive produce alongside Chase.
Project: MKUltra will focus on Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA chemist and spymaster often referred to as The Black Sorcerer. Gottlieb led the MKUltra program in the 1950s and ’60s, a secret operation that tested mind control techniques on both willing and unwilling subjects.
The program included experiments with psychedelic drugs, hypnosis, and even torture, all in an attempt to gain an edge during the Cold War. Gottlieb is also noted for unintentionally influencing the rise of LSD culture in the United States.
The series is expected to be a dramatic thriller that delves into the moral and ethical dilemmas of the MKUltra experiments, while also exploring Gottlieb’s complex role in history.
Chase, a seven-time Emmy winner including five awards for The Sopranos, has a reputation for creating intense, character-driven stories, and fans are eager to see how he handles a real-life story filled with secrecy and danger.
