Nicki Minaj has publicly defended her support for President Donald Trump’s efforts to protect Christians in Nigeria after facing criticism from fans.

On Saturday, Minaj shared a screenshot of a Truth Social post from Trump on X, in which he said Christians in Nigeria are “facing an existential threat” and that he is designating the country as a “country of particular concern.” Minaj praised the former president and said she felt “a deep sense of gratitude” for living in a country where people can freely worship God.

Trump’s post warned that continued persecution of Christians in Nigeria could lead to swift military action by the United States.

However, a spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Al Jazeera that Christians are not being specifically targeted. “There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria,” the spokesperson said, adding that killings in the country affect Muslims, traditional worshippers, and Christians alike.

Some of Minaj’s fans criticized her for publicly supporting Trump. One fan quote-tweeted her post, saying they might stop being a fan. “Nicki, as a die hard fan, who genuinely sticks besides you through every single scandal, you cozying up to this f*** loser, I might actually have to tap out… We live in a country that wants to weaponize religion so YOUR GAY FANS can be pushed into a corner and silenced,” the fan wrote.

Minaj responded strongly, defending her stance. “Imagine hearing that Christians are being MURDERED & making it about you being gay […] I’ll advocate for you the same way that I’m advocating for MURDERED CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA. Like I always have. Just remember that. Diligently. Compassionately. Just remember that part, too!!!!” She also questioned whether the fan was truly a die-hard supporter and threatened to block them.

Her post drew attention from Mike Waltz, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, who invited Minaj to the UN to discuss “in more depth what our administration is doing to protect Christians’ freedoms all over the world.”

Minaj shared the invitation with her fans on X, saying she was “the first female rapper in history to receive an invitation to the United Nations” and added, “COME ON BARBZ, LET’S MAKE AMERICA GAG AGAIN.”

The incident highlights Minaj’s willingness to publicly defend her political and humanitarian views, even when facing backlash from her own fans.
