Ruby Rose Slams Sydney Sweeney Over Christy Martin Biopic: “You’re a Cretin and You Ruined the Film”
Sydney Sweeney’s new film Christy has had a rough start at the box office, opening to only $1.3 million in its first weekend after hitting theaters on November 7.
The biographical sports drama, directed by David Michôd, follows the life of boxer Christy Martin, who became one of the most famous female fighters in America during the 1990s. The story also covers her complicated marriage to her coach, which ended in a violent attack in 2010.
Despite some positive reviews praising Sweeney’s performance, the movie’s debut ranks among the weakest openings ever for a wide release, according to Box Office Mojo. Out of all films that launched in more than 2,000 theaters, Christy landed 12th on the list of worst openings and ninth if re-releases are excluded.
After the numbers came out, Sweeney responded on Instagram by posting behind-the-scenes photos and thanking fans. “i am so deeply proud of this movie,” she wrote on November 10. “proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.”
But while Sweeney stayed positive, Ruby Rose wasn’t holding back. The Orange Is the New Black actress went on Threads the same day to criticize both Sweeney’s casting and performance. Rose claimed she was once considered for a role in the film and said the original version of the project was much better before it changed hands.

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry,” Rose wrote. “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting.”
She went further, blaming Sweeney and her team for mishandling a story that she says should have been told by people who truly understood it. “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’… None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Alongside Sweeney, the movie also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman. While critics had mixed feelings about the film overall, many agreed that Sweeney brought intensity and emotion to her portrayal of Martin.
