The movie is directed by Darren Aronofsky and features Austin Butler in the lead role. He plays a former baseball star who now works behind a bar and ends up in serious trouble after agreeing to look after a neighbor’s pet.
The cast also includes Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Benito Martínez Ocasio, Griffin Dunne, and Carol Kane. The script is written by Charlie Huston, who adapted the story from their own novel.

Sony released the film in theaters on August 29. The movie opened with $1.2 million during its Thursday previews and followed that with $9.6 million over the Labor Day weekend. By early October, box office totals reached $32 million worldwide. The score for the movie was created by Rob Simonsen and recorded with the help of the band Idles.
Critics received the film positively. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 84% of 242 critics gave it a good review, and the site’s summary says, “A freewheeling throwback, Caught Stealing splendidly showcases Austin Butler’s movie star charisma while marking a surprisingly lighthearted gearshift for director Darren Aronofsky.” On Metacritic, the film sits at 65, which shows mostly favorable reviews. Audience reactions were measured by CinemaScore, where moviegoers gave it a grade of “B.”
The movie’s blend of crime, humor, and chaos made it stand out among 2025 releases, and its arrival on Netflix is expected to help it reach even more viewers who missed it in theaters.
