Director Joseph Kosinski has confirmed that a sequel to the blockbuster film Top Gun: Maverick is currently in the works.

Speaking to Variety, Kosinski also mentioned that there are ongoing discussions about a sequel to the movie F1.

The original Top Gun: Maverick, released in 2022, brought Tom Cruise back as naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The film followed him as he trained a new generation of pilots, including the son of his late best friend, for a high-risk mission.

The movie featured an ensemble cast including Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer in his final role.

The idea for a Top Gun sequel has been around for years. In 2010, Paramount Pictures announced plans for a follow-up to the 1986 original. Development slowed after the death of director Tony Scott in 2012. Filming eventually resumed in 2017 when Kosinski was hired to direct. Production ran from May 2018 to April 2019, with locations in California, Washington, and Maryland.

The movie used IMAX-certified 6K cameras for its complex aerial sequences. Its release was delayed due to the demanding action scenes and later the COVID-19 pandemic. Cruise insisted on a full theatrical release rather than selling the streaming rights, even when offers were made.

Top Gun: Maverick premiered at CinemaCon in April 2022 and opened in U.S. theaters on May 27. The film was widely praised, with many critics calling it better than the original. It received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Sound. The film grossed $1.496 billion worldwide, making it Cruise’s highest-grossing movie ever and the second-highest-grossing film of 2022.

Deadline Hollywood estimated its net profit at $391.1 million, taking into account production costs, marketing, and talent participations.

The sequel has been in discussion for a while. In 2022, Miles Teller revealed he was pitching a follow-up called Top Gun: Rooster, focusing on his character. Teller also said he had ongoing talks with Cruise about the project. In May of this year, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie confirmed he is writing Top Gun 3.
