The first clip from the highly anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally been released, giving fans a glimpse of the next chapter in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi saga. The film is the third installment in the Avatar series and follows Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

Avatar: Fire and Ash brings back familiar faces, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet all reprising their roles.

The story picks up a year after Jake and Neytiri have settled with the Metkayina clan. Their family is dealing with grief after the death of Neteyam. They soon face a new and aggressive Na’vi tribe called the Ash people, led by the fiery leader Varang, who has teamed up with Jake’s old enemy, Quaritch. The conflict on Pandora grows more intense and dangerous.

James Cameron directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The story was developed by Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. The film is produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and will be distributed by 20th Century Studios.

Cameron first mentioned wanting to make Avatar sequels back in 2006. The first two sequels were officially announced in 2010 after the success of the original film. Over the years, the project faced multiple delays, partly because of the new technology required to capture underwater scenes, something never done before in film. Filming for Fire and Ash began in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, and continued for over three years, wrapping up in late December 2020.

The release of Avatar: Fire and Ash has been postponed nine times. According to 20th Century Studios, the movie is now scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on December 19. Two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are also in production, with release dates planned for 2029 and 2031.
