Bowen Yang Rules Out ‘Wicked 3’: “We Leave It Here”
Bowen Yang has confirmed that fans shouldn’t expect a third “Wicked” film anytime soon. Speaking to Variety’s Marc Malkin at the New York City premiere of “Wicked: For Good,” Yang, who stars in the musical and is known from “Saturday Night Live,” said the story feels complete as it stands.
“I think we leave it here,” Yang said, reflecting on the follow-up to last year’s “Wicked.” He did joke about exploring a potential spinoff with his character Pfannee and Bronwyn James’ ShenShen, comparing it to “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.”
“Wicked: For Good” adapts the second and final act of the Broadway hit, and currently there are no plans to continue the story in another film.
Series director Jon M. Chu added that while ideas for a third installment exist, the focus for now is on enjoying the current release. “What’s it about? You know, there’s a lot of ideas flying around right now. … We’ll see. Let’s enjoy this ride first,” Chu said.
Yang also shared his excitement about Ariana Grande returning to host “Saturday Night Live” in December, with Cher as the musical guest. “I cannot wait. I’m so glad that we have her presence there,” Yang said. He also joked about pitching a holiday sketch featuring Cher impressions. “Ariana definitely has a good Cher impression. We’ve had ‘Christopher Walken Reunion’ [sketch] where everyone has a Cher impression. I’m going to pitch a ‘Cher Family Reunion’ for Christmas time. Everyone has a Cher impression.”
At the premiere, both Grande and co-star Cynthia Erivo attended but skipped interviews. Universal told reporters that Erivo was “not feeling well and has lost her voice,” while Grande declined interviews in support of her co-star. Other cast members present included Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Colman Domingo, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.
