‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 First Look Arrives as Season 4 Gets the Green Light
HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon will return for a fourth season, set to premiere in 2028. Fans won’t have to wait too long for the next chapter, as the third season is expected to air in the summer of 2026.
The announcement came during an HBO press event in New York. CEO Casey Bloys revealed that another Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has also been renewed for a second season, even before its first season starts on January 18.
That second season is scheduled for 2027, which means fans will get new stories from Westeros every year until 2028.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s EVP of programming, praised the upcoming seasons, saying, “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe. Together, ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be.”
“In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have captured so beautifully. And this summer, ‘House of the Dragon’ is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
Critics have generally liked the show. Season two has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 272 reviews, with an average score of 7.55 out of 10. Rotten Tomatoes said, “Approaching its dynastic cataclysm with a deliberate stride rather than a charging gallop, House of the Dragon carefully sets up its emotional stakes to make the fiery spectacle all the more scorching.”
On Metacritic, the season scored 73 out of 100, which means generally favorable reviews.
Viewership has been strong, even if the premiere numbers were slightly lower than season one. The second season debuted with 7.8 million viewers across TV and streaming, down from 10 million the previous season.
In Latin America, the audience was up 30% compared to season one. Samba TV reported that 1.3 million U.S. households watched the first airing of season two, compared to 2.6 million for season one. Streaming also performed well. Nielsen reported that during the week of June 17–23, 2024, viewers streamed 1.23 billion minutes of the show. The season finale reached 8.9 million viewers across TV and streaming, marking the highest streaming numbers for any episode in the series so far.
With season three on the horizon and season four already confirmed, House of the Dragon fans have plenty to look forward to. The show continues to expand George R. R. Martin’s universe while keeping viewers hooked with epic battles and Targaryen drama.
