These individuals endured grueling rehabilitation processes where they often had to relearn basic functions like walking or speaking. Their eventual returns to the screen serve as powerful testaments to resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Kevin Hart

This comedian and actor fractured his spine in three places during a severe car crash in Malibu in 2019. He underwent emergency back surgery to fuse the fractures and spent days in the hospital before moving to a rehabilitation facility. The injury required him to rebuild his physical strength from the ground up through months of intense physical therapy. Hart returned to filming action movies and performing stand-up comedy with a renewed perspective on life and health.

Tracy Morgan

The ’30 Rock’ star was critically injured in 2014 when a Walmart truck struck his limousine on the New Jersey Turnpike. Morgan suffered a traumatic brain injury alongside a broken leg and broken ribs which left him in a coma for two weeks. He spent months in a wheelchair and underwent rigorous speech and cognitive therapy to regain his faculties. Morgan made an emotional return to television to host ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 2015 before resuming his acting career.

Jamie Foxx

In April 2023 this Academy Award winner experienced a sudden and severe medical complication that led to a lengthy hospitalization. Details of the specific condition remained private while he underwent extensive physical rehabilitation at a specialized facility in Chicago. Foxx had to step away from filming the movie ‘Back in Action’ during his recovery period. He eventually made a public return to accept an award and resumed his work in the entertainment industry the following year.

Morgan Freeman

The legendary actor was involved in a serious car accident in Mississippi in 2008 that required the Jaws of Life to extract him from the vehicle. He suffered broken bones and severe nerve damage in his left arm and hand. The injury left him with fibromyalgia and a paralyzed hand that he often covers with a compression glove during public appearances. Martin Lawrence

In 1999 the comedian collapsed from severe heat exhaustion while jogging in heavy clothing to prepare for a movie role. Before his massive success in music and film, Curtis Jackson survived a brutal attack in 2000 where he was shot nine times. He suffered injuries to his hand, arm, hip, both legs, chest, and face which left him with a permanently altered speaking voice. Jackson spent 13 days in the hospital and months in recovery while being dropped by his record label. He channeled this trauma into his art and eventually starred in the semi-autobiographical film ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin”.

Robert Guillaume

While filming the sitcom ‘Sports Night’ in 1999 this Emmy-winning actor suffered a stroke in his dressing room. The show’s creators incorporated the health scare into the storyline and allowed his character to suffer a stroke as well. Guillaume underwent therapy to regain his speech and mobility before returning to the set to complete the season. He continued to work in voice acting and television roles until his passing years later.

Ben Vereen

The Tony Award-winning performer suffered life-threatening internal injuries and a broken leg after being struck by a truck in 1992. This accident occurred shortly after he had suffered a stroke while driving. Vereen spent months in intense physical rehabilitation to regain his ability to walk and perform. He successfully returned to the stage and screen and appeared in projects like ‘Jelly’s Last Jam’ just a year later.

Richard Roundtree

The original ‘Shaft’ actor was diagnosed with male breast cancer in 1993 during the height of his career.
