Matthew Perry’s mother and stepfather have spoken out ahead of the sentencing for the doctor involved in the actor’s death, sharing emotional victim impact statements with the court.

According to Rolling Stone, the letters were submitted before the sentencing of Dr. Plasencia on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, and his stepfather, Keith Morrison, expressed the depth of their grief. “How do you measure grief? Can you possibly provide any rational accounting? The bottom falling out? Yes, that,” they wrote.

The couple described their heartbreak over losing their son and criticized the doctor’s actions. “And then those greedy jackals come out of the dark, and all the effort is for naught; it all crashes down,” they said. They called Plasencia “among the most culpable of all” and said their pain feels like a “deep well” with no bottom.

Plasencia had a plea agreement stating he supplied 20 vials of ketamine, along with ketamine lozenges and syringes, to Perry and his live-in personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, between September 30 and October 12, 2023, ABC News reported.

Perry died on October 28, 2023, from acute effects of ketamine, combined with other factors including drowning, coronary artery disease, and effects of buprenorphine, a medication used to treat opioid addiction, according to his autopsy.

The letter continued, describing the actor’s unfulfilled potential. “His story moved so many people. And he wanted, needed, deserved…a third act. It was…in the planning. And then, those jackals,” they wrote. The pair accused the doctor of taking advantage of Perry’s vulnerability, recalling a cruel comment: “I wonder how much this moron will pay. Let’s find out.”

Perry’s father and stepmother, John and Debby Perry, also submitted a letter. They described Matthew as “a warm, loving man who was to be our rock as we aged. An uncle to our grandchildren and the mountain his siblings could turn to. Our next patriarch.” They criticized Plasencia for ignoring his responsibility, writing, “Matthew’s recovery counted on you saying NO.”

They questioned the doctor’s motives, asking, “How long did you possibly see supplying Matthew countless doses without his death to eventually follow? Did you care? Did you think? How many more people have you harmed that we don’t know about?”

Plasencia faces up to 40 years in prison on four counts of distributing ketamine. He was arrested in August 2024, along with four others connected to Perry’s death.

One of the other defendants, Jasveen Sangha, nicknamed “The Ketamine Queen” by prosecutors, pleaded guilty in September to several charges, including distribution of ketamine resulting in death, the Associated Press reported. Sangha is set to be sentenced on Dec. 10.

The letters from Perry’s family provide a raw and emotional glimpse into the pain left by his death, highlighting the deep sense of loss and anger toward those they hold responsible.
