Many fans have been wondering if The Elder Scrolls could be the next big TV project for Bethesda after the huge success of Amazon’s Fallout series. Todd Howard has now spoken about the possibility, and while he isn’t closing the door, he isn’t opening it either.

Eurogamer spoke with Howard while the second season of Fallout was getting ready to launch. When the topic of an Elder Scrolls show came up, he explained that Fallout had been in development for television long before anyone knew about it.

He said, “I will say this, the Fallout journey was like a 10 year one. After Fallout 3, people were asking to do a movie or show for Fallout, and we really took our time.” According to Eurogamer, Howard told them he “can’t rule in or rule out an Elder Scrolls thing in the future,” but he felt Fallout was “more uniquely suited” to TV and had “more to say in its genre.”

Howard also noted that the success of the Fallout show surprised him. He said, “But, you never know. I think the impact of the show on Fallout as a franchise has been bigger than I expected, so it does make you think like, ‘Hey, is there a path?’ But, nothing today… [and] I’m willing to say ‘no’ for a decade.” For now, it seems Bethesda has no active plans tied to The Elder Scrolls.

Fallout’s future on TV also seems secure. Season 3 has already been confirmed, and the cast appears ready to continue for several more years. Actor Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, told IGN that the full story stretches far ahead.

He explained, “When I signed on to do the series, we would have a starting point and they gave me the endpoint… But it is Season 5, 6 type of endpoint.” He added that the team expected the characters to develop slowly over time.

With Fallout locked in for several more seasons, an Elder Scrolls series doesn’t look like something Bethesda is rushing toward. Still, Howard’s comments make it clear that the idea is not completely off the table. Fans will likely keep hoping, especially with The Elder Scrolls 6 still a long wait away.
