Leonardo DiCaprio is thinking a lot about how technology is changing movies, and one subject he isn’t avoiding is AI. In a recent conversation with Time, he talked about both the promise and the risks that come with these tools.

He said he understands why people in the film world are worried, especially those who fear their skills might be replaced. But he also believes there is room to explore what AI can add to the creative process.

DiCaprio explained that he doesn’t see AI as something that should take over filmmaking. Instead, he thinks it could help young directors bring new ideas to life.

As he put it, “It could be an enhancement tool for a young filmmaker to do something we’ve never seen before.” He stressed that the key part for him is the word enhancement, not replacement.

He also made it clear that he thinks real art still needs to come from human experience. DiCaprio said that AI can create things that sound impressive at first, but they often don’t connect on a deeper emotional level.

He compared this to popular AI-made mashup songs online. “I think anything that is going to be authentically thought of as art has to come from the human being,” he said. He mentioned how some AI music blends different artists’ voices or styles in surprising ways, and while he thinks some of it is creative, it doesn’t stay with people. “There’s no anchoring to it. There’s no humanity to it, as brilliant as it is,” he added.

His comments show a mix of caution and curiosity. DiCaprio seems open to the idea that AI can help push film in new directions, but he doesn’t believe it can replace the heart of storytelling.
