Russell Crowe Critiques ‘Gladiator 2’: Says It Misses the Original’s Moral Core
Russell Crowe has shared his thoughts on the sequel to Gladiator, saying he feels it lacks the moral foundation that made the original movie special.
The 2000 film, which followed Crowe’s character Maximus as he fought for revenge for his murdered family, became a classic partly because of the strong ethical center of its main character. Crowe believes the sequel, Gladiator 2, strayed from that.
In an interview with the Australian outlet Triple J, Crowe said, “I think the recent sequel that, you know, we don’t have to name out loud, is a really unfortunate example of even the people in that engine room not actually understanding what made the first one special. It wasn’t the pomp. It wasn’t the circumstance. It wasn’t the action. It was the moral core.”
Crowe was particularly critical of the way the sequel reimagines Maximus’ story. The new film centers on Paul Mescal’s character, Lucius, who is revealed to be Maximus’ illegitimate son, something that was not hinted at in the original movie.
Crowe said this plot choice seemed to compromise Maximus’ moral integrity. He explained that the original character’s morality was key to his quest for revenge and that changing his personal life in the sequel didn’t make sense. “The amount of times they suggested s** scenes and stuff like that for Maximus, it’s like you’re taking away his power. So you’re saying at the same time he had this relationship with his wife, he was f**** this other girl? What are you talking about? It’s crazy,”* Crowe said.
Crowe also recalled the work it took during the first film to maintain Maximus’ moral compass. “The thing is, there was a daily fight on that set. It was a daily fight to keep that moral core of the character,” he said, emphasizing how important it was to protect the essence of Maximus.
Gladiator 2, directed and produced by Ridley Scott, stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Derek Jacobi and Nielsen reprise their roles from the first film. The movie follows Lucius, the exiled prince of Rome, as he becomes a prisoner of war and fights as a gladiator while a former slave plots to overthrow the twin emperors Caracalla and Geta.
The sequel was first discussed back in 2001, but production was delayed for years. It was officially announced in 2018, with Mescal cast as the lead in January 2023.
The film earned generally positive reviews but was considered not as strong as the original, grossing $462.2 million worldwide. It received Golden Globe nominations for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Supporting Actor for Washington, and an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.
