‘The Mask’ Star Found Dead in New York City
Actor Peter Greene, famous for his roles in The Mask and Pulp Fiction, was found dead in his Lower East Side apartment on Friday afternoon. He was 60 years old. His longtime manager, Gregg Edwards, confirmed the news to The Post.
Greene was discovered unresponsive in his Clinton Street apartment around 3:25 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and Edwards. Authorities said no foul play is suspected, but the official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
“He was a terrific guy. Truly one of the great actors of our generation. His heart was as big as there was. I’m going to miss him. He was a great friend,” Edwards said.
Greene, known for playing complex villains, had a career that included memorable roles in Pulp Fiction, where he played Zed, The Mask as Dorian Tyrell, Clean, Shaven as Peter Winter, and The Usual Suspects as Redfoot. He also appeared in Judgment Night, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Training Day, and The Bounty Hunter, often portraying characters with a dark or dangerous edge.
At the time of his passing, Greene was set to begin work in January on an independent thriller called Mascots alongside Mickey Rourke. Edwards said the film’s director, Kerry Mondragón, was devastated by the news. “They were very upset,” Edwards said.
Edwards also reflected on Greene’s approach to acting. “He worked with so many amazing actors and directors. His performance as ruthless mobster Dorian Tyrell opposite Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz in The Mask was arguably his best role. He fought his demons but overcame them,” he said.
Greene struggled with drug addiction in the 1990s, including heroin and cocaine, and had a 2007 arrest for crack cocaine possession. Despite these personal battles, he maintained a reputation as a perfectionist who gave every role his full effort.
Peter Greene’s talent for playing villains left a lasting impression on Hollywood. His intense performances and dedication to his craft are remembered by colleagues and fans alike.
