Rob and Michele Reiner, the acclaimed director and his wife, were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday. Law enforcement officials say they suffered stab wounds. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been taken into police custody. According to online jail records, he remains held with bail set at $4 million. The exact charges against him have not been disclosed.

Sources close to the Reiner family told TMZ that the couple had attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday with Nick. During the event, Rob and Nick reportedly got into a “very loud argument” that many guests could hear. The family sources said Rob and Michele left the party afterward, though it’s unclear if Nick stayed.

TMZ also reported that Michele had been expressing her distress over the past few months, saying she and Rob were at their wits’ end with Nick’s mental health struggles and alleged substance abuse. She reportedly told friends, “We’ve tried everything.”

Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about his challenges with addiction and homelessness. In 2016, he and his father worked together on a semi-autobiographical film, Being Charlie, which explored parts of their relationship.

Rob Reiner told The Associated Press at the time, “We didn’t go into it thinking this is going to be therapeutic or bring us closer, but it did come out that way. It forced us to understand ourselves better than we had.”

Rob Reiner, the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, had a long and celebrated career in Hollywood. His works include classics like This Is Spinal Tap, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, and The Princess Bride. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues, and public figures including former President Barack Obama, Jerry O’Connell, and James Woods.

Officials have yet to release full details about the investigation. A law enforcement official, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, confirmed Nick’s custody but would not provide further specifics.
