Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, reuniting with Nolan after their work together on Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, while Tom Holland takes the role of their son, Telemachus.
The movie also features a large ensemble cast, including Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan produces the film with his wife, Emma Thomas, under their production company, Syncopy.
The story is based on Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. It follows Odysseus on a long and dangerous journey home. Along the way, he encounters mythical creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. The film focuses on his struggle to reunite with Penelope and reclaim his kingdom.
Nolan started writing the movie in March 2024 and secured the project with Universal Pictures by October of that year. Casting took place later in 2024, with Matt Damon confirmed in February. Filming ran from February to August and took place across several countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara.
With a reported budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is Nolan’s most expensive film so far. It is also his first movie shot entirely on IMAX 70 mm cameras.
The Odyssey is set to be released in theaters on July 17, 2026. The film promises Nolan’s signature scale, epic visuals, and a modern take on one of the oldest stories in Western literature.
