Simu Liu is speaking out, again, about the lack of representation for Asian actors in Hollywood.

The Shang-Chi star recently discussed how Asian actors often get overlooked for major roles, including iconic characters like James Bond. He told reporters that, “It doesn’t seem like anyone is asking the same question for Asian actors,” referring to casting speculation about who would replace Daniel Craig.

Liu said he understands why he might not be considered for certain blockbuster roles, but he feels lucky to play characters where cultural identity is part of the story. “Knowing that I would never get an opportunity to play a role like Bond, something like the Alexander Hale character is such a blessing because his cultural identity is really baked into his character,” he said. He added that the character’s background adds depth to the story, showing challenges that characters like James Bond or Ethan Hunt wouldn’t face.

Liu also shared his experience working behind the scenes as an executive producer. He said he got early access to the writing room and contributed ideas to the show. “Getting let in at such an early stage is something that has never happened to me before… [The creators] were so generous,” he said.

He emphasized that his role wasn’t just a title. “A lot of it is vanity based… I wanted to experience the full spectrum of what that would entail. And they were so great in letting me into the writer’s room, allowing me to bring my own ideas and really talking through some characters.”

A few weeks ago, Liu also spoke out about the broader lack of Asian representation in Hollywood. In a post, he wrote, “Put some Asians in literally anything right now. The amount of backslide in our representation onscreen is f*** appalling. Studios think we’re ‘risky.’” He pointed out that films led by Asian actors, including Minari, The Farewell, Past Lives, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crazy Rich Asians, and Shang-Chi, have been major successes. “These results show that Asian talent can carry big projects and that Hollywood’s hesitation doesn’t make sense,” he said.
