“Avatar: Fire and Ash” is expected to hit a major milestone at the global box office today, crossing the $500 million mark.

The film opened to $347 million worldwide and surprised the industry by pulling in nearly another $150 million between Monday and Wednesday, showing strong staying power. Box office analysts now expect it to reach $1 billion before its third weekend.

As of December 23, the film has made $129.6 million in the United States and Canada, while earning $353.6 million in other markets, bringing its total worldwide gross to $483.3 million, according to box office tracking sources. Before the U.S. and Canadian release, Deadline Hollywood projected the film would open to $340–$380 million globally, so its debut slightly exceeded expectations.

During Thursday previews in the U.S. and Canada, “Fire and Ash” earned $12 million, which was $5 million less than what “Avatar: The Way of Water” made during its previews. The movie then went on to make $89.2 million in its opening weekend domestically. While this led the box office and outperformed the 2009 “Avatar” debut of $77 million, it was still lower than the $134.1 million opening of its 2022 predecessor.

The strong early performance suggests that “Avatar: Fire and Ash” could surpass previous entries in terms of overall box office momentum, especially with the holiday season boosting audience attendance.

This shows that James Cameron’s franchise still has a huge global draw, and the film’s continuing success could make it one of the highest-grossing releases of 2025.
