Marty Supreme is off to a massive start at the box office. The film earned $10.8 million in the U.S. on its first day in theaters. Industry box office trackers report that this is the biggest single-day opening ever for an A24 release. It also ranks as the third largest Christmas Day opening in history for an R-rated film.

The movie first hit theaters in a very small rollout. It opened on December 19 in only six locations, split between Los Angeles and New York City. Even with that limited release, it quickly showed strong demand.

The film brought in $875,000 during its opening weekend. That result gave it a per-theater average of $145,933, which is the highest A24 has ever seen. According to industry analysts, no film has posted a stronger per-theater number since La La Land in 2016.

With the movie expanding nationwide over Christmas, box office experts expect the numbers to climb fast. Current projections estimate that Marty Supreme could earn between $12 million and $20 million during its four-day holiday run. These estimates are based on early ticket sales and audience turnout reported by theater chains and distribution sources.

Marty Supreme is a sports comedy-drama released by A24. The film was directed by Josh Safdie, who also worked on the script with Ronald Bronstein. The story takes inspiration from the real-life journey of table tennis player Marty Reisman.

Timothée Chalamet stars in the lead role and also served as a producer on the project. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher. The visuals were shot by cinematographer Darius Khondji, and the music was created by Daniel Lopatin.

The film first screened at the New York Film Festival on October 6. It later opened nationwide in the United States on December 25. Since its premiere, Marty Supreme has received strong praise from critics. Reviews have highlighted the film’s direction, writing, editing, and music. Many critics have also pointed to Chalamet’s performance as one of the strongest of his career.

The movie’s awards run is already gaining momentum. Marty Supreme was selected as one of the top ten films of the year by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

It also picked up three nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category, Best Actor for Chalamet, and Best Screenplay for Safdie and Bronstein.

Set in 1950s New York City, the film follows Marty Mauser, a rising table tennis player who pushes through setbacks while chasing success in a competitive world.
