Superman is one of the greatest superheroes ever created, and for that reason, much has been written about his powers, character, and significance in the world of comic books. In today’s post, we’re going to focus on one of the most personal aspects of Superman, his sexual orientation. While his relationship with Lois Lane is at this point legendary, could there be more than meets the eye? Let’s see if Superman is gay, bisexual, or straight.

Superman is straight. All of his relationships in DC continuity have been with women, most notably he’s been married to Lois Lane with whom he even had a son. However, the other holder of the mantle of Superman, Clark Kent’s son, Jon Kent, is confirmed to be bisexual in the DC canon.

Now that we’ve covered the answer to our main question, it’s time to work over the details. If you’re interested in the history of Superman’s relationships, stay with us and keep reading!

What is Superman’s sexual orientation? Was he ever gay?

Clark Kent, aka Superman, was never gay. While his relationship with Lois Lane is the most famous and the only fully established relationship in DC continuity he had many love interestest over the years. None of them stuck in the same way that Lois did. All of those relationships were with women, so Superman was always straight.

Superman debuted back in 1938, in Action Comics #1, and he was always a representation of an impeccable self-sacrificing hero. A true strong role model for generations to come. His sexual orientation is simply a reflection of the ideals that were respected back then.

But, speaking of his relationships, we’ve mentioned that he had a few. Both in comic books, tv-series, and movies.

Superman was involved with Lana Lang

Lana Lang is Superman’s childhood love. She was associated with him back in Smallville and through the course of their friendship, she was trying to prove that Clark Kent and Superman are one and the same.

In numerous instances, she was also stuck in a rivalry for Superman’s affection with Lois Lane. As faith would have it, eventually Superman’s and Lana’s feelings chilled, and he dedicated himself solely to Lois, and one of the greatest comic book romances was born.

That doesn’t mean that Lana was not important, she was a big and essential part of Superman’s identity back in Smallville, especially while his personality was still being formed. She was a girl-next-door, and will forever be Superman’s teen flame.

Superman and Wonder Woman dated briefly

Can you imagine a more powerful pairing of superheroes than that of Superman and Wonder Woman? Turns out the writers decided to give it a chance during the New 52 years of DC.

They might have worked great as allies and friends, but the relationship lacked its fire. However, they did at one point have a child together Hunter Prince that first appeared in Justice League #26. This power couple was ultimately doomed to fail, even the fans didn’t like that relationship all that much.

Superman and Lori Lemaris used to date

Lori Lemaris was mermaid from Tritonis. She was a long-term romantic interest of Superman. Superman went to great lengths to secure her heart, he even stalked her. Turns out he had a good reason for this, as she was hiding something big from him, to be fair he attempted to hide his secret identity from Lori as well.

Since Lori was a mermaid she needed to hide the lower portion of her body and she often left their dates a bit early. Of course, she needed to do that in order to submerge herself in water as soon as possible.

Superman noticed some weird things about Lori but decided to ignore them until he asked her to marry him one day and she said no. As love said no, Superman decided to follow her due to sensing something fishy was going on. He discovered that she was a mermaid. This fact didn’t bring them closer together, instead, they decided to break things off for good since it would never work out between them.

Superman’s greatest love is Lois Lane

Loise Lane debuted in the same issue as Superman, and even though it wasn’t always certain that the two are going to make it, they did make it and went into the annals as one of the most famous comic book couples in history.

The relationship between the two wasn’t always smooth sailing, but now they’re pretty much established in the DC continuity they even have a son together, Superboy Jon Kent. But we’re going to discuss him in more detail later. With everything said, it’s absolutely certain that Superman was always straight.

What is Jon Kent’s sexuality?

Jon Kent, Lois’ and Clark’s son is the newest superhero that holds the Superman mantle and the writers decided to make him bisexual. Jon Kent has officially been confirmed as bisexual and his relationship will debut in Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 set to be released on November 9.

Even though the writers decided to form his identity differently from that of Clark Kent, Jon Kent did in a way followed in his father’s footsteps. He became romantically involved with reporter Jay Nakamura. It would seem that Kryptonian genes simply cannot resist news reporters.

And that’s about it. As you can see Clark Kent is clearly straight due to all of his relationships being with various women (and mermaids). His most notable relationship is that with Lois Lane, which eventually produced Jon Kent, the current Superman. Speaking of current Superman, he was confirmed to be bisexual and romantically involved with reporter Jay Nakamura. The writers decided to give a new and unique personality to Jon Kent and he will manage to influence generations to come, just like his father did.
