George Clooney recently opened up about his past friendship with Donald Trump and how their relationship changed over time.

Clooney says he once knew Trump well and even interacted with him socially. “I knew him very well. He used to call me a lot, and he tried to help me get into a hospital once to see a back surgeon. I’d see him out at clubs and at restaurants. He’s a big goofball. Well, he was. That all changed,” Clooney said.

Clooney also reflected on how his father, a journalist, shaped his sense of morality and civic duty. This influence inspired Clooney’s work on Good Night, and Good Luck, a film about CBS News standing up to Senator Joseph McCarthy.

Clooney has said he drew parallels between that story and how media covered events like the lead-up to the Iraq War.

The actor expressed frustration with major networks settling lawsuits with Trump. When he played Murrow last year, CBS News had agreed to a legal settlement with Trump so that the network could secure approval for a sale of its parent company.

ABC News had also settled a defamation claim with the former president. “If CBS and ABC had challenged those lawsuits and said, ‘Go f*** yourself,’ we wouldn’t be where we are in the country,” Clooney said. “That’s simply the truth.”

In 2024, Clooney made headlines for a New York Times op-ed in which he urged President Joe Biden to drop out of the race following a poor debate performance. While some Democrats praised his stance, members of the Biden family criticized him for disloyalty.
