Netflix Lands World’s Most Popular Spy Franchise in Massive New Deal
James Bond is heading to Netflix in a move few people expected. According to reports from Deadline, Amazon has agreed to license several major Bond films to its biggest streaming rival starting in January.
Beginning January 15, Netflix users in multiple regions will be able to watch four films from the franchise. These include Die Another Day, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and No Time to Die. The movies will be available in the United States, parts of Europe, the Nordics, and several countries in Latin America.
This deal puts much of Daniel Craig’s Bond era on Netflix, from one of its weaker entries to the actor’s final and emotional sendoff. It also means one of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond films will be available on the platform as well.
The agreement is not limited to Bond. Netflix will also add several other Amazon-owned titles to its library. These include the Rocky and Creed films, Legally Blonde, and the series The Man in the High Castle. Earlier this month, another Amazon-backed show, Hunters, quietly made the jump to Netflix.
Sources familiar with the deal told Deadline that the decision was made to expand the reach of these titles and reconnect with audiences worldwide. The move suggests that streaming companies are becoming more open to sharing content again after years of keeping it exclusive.
Chris Ottinger, Head of Worldwide Distribution at Amazon MGM Studios, addressed the deal in a statement. “When Amazon acquired MGM, Amazon’s plan was to continue licensing MGM’s iconic library to streaming and television partners around the world. Bringing these iconic films and shows to Netflix is part of that continued strategy.”
“James Bond remains one of the most enduring and influential franchises in cinematic history… and this agreement reflects the continued global appetite for premium storytelling and the strong working relationship we’ve built with Netflix.”
Amazon is not stepping away from Bond entirely. Prime Video still runs special Bond programming each year around Global James Bond Day, and MGM+ continues to air Bond films throughout the year. Amazon is also still developing a new Bond movie, with Denis Villeneuve attached to direct.
