Amy Poehler Reveals Why She Launched Her Podcast: “So Many Men Do the Bare Minimum”
Amy Poehler has opened up about why she decided to start her own podcast, sharing her thoughts on the inspiration behind it. The Parks and Recreation star told The Good Hand that she wanted a space where she could share conversations without the pressure of always striving for perfection.
“Like one of the reasons why I want to do this podcast is as I’ve watched so many men do the bare minimum. And this, I’m truly giving 25%, which is for most people 75%. But it’s like enough is enough. Enough with the 100%. And enough with improving ourselves and listening to stuff about how we’re supposed to get better and better and better,” Poehler explained jokingly.

In 2025, she launched Good Hang with Amy Poehler, a podcast featuring relaxed interviews with her comedy friends. The show is designed to feel low-key, allowing for honest conversations and lighthearted moments. Poehler is also an active feminist and has long supported causes that advance women’s rights and worker protections.
Her history of advocacy goes back to 2008, when she co-founded Smart Girls at the Party with Meredith Walker and Amy Miles. The project began as an online community and digital series aimed at empowering young girls. In 2012, it returned as a YouTube channel, featuring new episodes and advice segments called Ask Amy, where viewers could submit life questions. Legendary Entertainment later acquired the initiative, and Poehler said the goal was to continue “providing funny and inspirational content for all of the goofballs out there.”
Beyond Smart Girls, Poehler has championed several social and political causes. She collaborated with the National Domestic Workers Alliance to support the California Domestic Worker Bill of Rights and backed the One Fair Wage campaign for tipped workers. She has also served as a celebrity ambassador for the Worldwide Orphans Foundation and worked alongside Michelle Obama on initiatives like Let’s Move! to promote youth health.
Poehler is also an author. Her 2014 memoir, Yes Please, debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list. She told NPR that writing the book allowed her to share personal experiences more easily than current events. The book covers topics like body image, parenthood, and learning to accept the limits of physical appearance.
Amy Poehler’s podcast and activism reflect her desire to create spaces for honest conversations and meaningful work, while still embracing humor and creativity.
