Gwyneth Paltrow Claims She Was “Fired” From Film After Divorce From Chris Martin
Gwyneth Paltrow says she was dropped from a movie shortly after her divorce from Coldplay’s Chris Martin, telling Amy Poehler on the “Good Hang” podcast that the timing was rough.
Paltrow, who stars in the new A24 sports drama “Marty Supreme,” recalled that the film’s distributor might have felt she was “too hot to touch” during the media frenzy around her split.
“I was supposed to do a movie at one point, and it was like right after the conscious uncoupling thing with Chris, and there was a lot of harsh stuff in the press,” Paltrow said. “I think the distributor was like, ‘This might be too hot to touch.’”
She added with some dry humor, “So that was great because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired off. So it was so awesome.”
Paltrow’s divorce from Martin became public in 2014 when she described it as a “conscious uncoupling” in a blog post.
The phrase drew intense media attention, with some critics calling it pretentious. On the podcast, Paltrow reflected on why the topic hit a nerve for so many people.
“Say you had had a really nasty divorce, or your parents had had a really nasty divorce,” she said. “And then you hear this idea that like, it doesn’t have to be done this way. I think the implicit learning is like, ‘Oh, f***. Like, they’re saying I did something wrong.’”
She continued, “That makes sense to me, like, ‘Oh no, is the inference that I mess someone up.’ Like, that’s not a nice thing to contemplate. So I do understand why it was so personal for people.”
Paltrow was on the podcast to talk about “Marty Supreme,” which also stars Timothée Chalamet, Odessa A’zion, and Kevin O’Leary. The actress said she felt reconnected with her love for acting through the project.
“I don’t know if people will like it or not, but it’s a real swing and everyone’s great at their job. And so I was like, ‘Wow, I think I miss this, you know?’”
