Matt Damon Drops 13 kg for New Movie — Here’s What He Cut From His Diet
Matt Damon has revealed that a major change in his diet helped him lose a large amount of weight for his latest movie role.
The 55-year-old actor spoke about his physical transformation while appearing on the New Heights podcast, hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce. During the conversation, Damon explained how he prepared for his role in the upcoming film The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan.
Damon said the director wanted him to look lean but still strong for the movie. He explained that this required serious training and strict control over his daily routine. According to Damon, exercise and diet became part of his job, similar to how professional athletes train for a season.
The biggest change, he said, was removing gluten from his diet. “I literally… stopped eating gluten,” Damon told the hosts. He explained that the decision came after working with his doctor.
As a result, Damon said his weight dropped to 167 pounds. He added that he normally weighs much more and had not been that light since he was in high school. “I used to walk around between 185 and 200. I did that whole movie at 167,” he said, adding that the process involved intense workouts and a very controlled diet.
Damon also shared that he has continued avoiding gluten even after filming ended. “I’m done. I’m done. I’m gluten-free everything,” he said.
A gluten-free diet removes gluten, a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. While many people follow this diet for medical reasons like celiac disease, experts say it is not required for everyone.
Grace Fjeldberg, a registered dietitian with the Mayo Clinic Health System, previously told Business Insider that gluten is not harmful for most people. She explained that a balanced diet with whole and minimally processed foods can still include grains that contain gluten. According to health experts, avoiding gluten does not automatically lead to weight loss or better health.
Damon has gone through tough physical training before. In a 2016 interview with the BBC, he spoke about how demanding it was to get back into shape for his return to the Bourne movies. He said the process became much harder as he got older and described the training as extremely challenging.
