Jennifer Lawrence Opens Up About the Actor Type She Avoids on Set
Jennifer Lawrence is known for being honest, and she didn’t hold back during an interview. While appearing on the YouTube series Hot Ones, the actress opened up about acting styles and revealed the one type of co-star that makes her uncomfortable. The comments come directly from her appearance on the show, where celebrities answer questions while eating spicy wings.
During the conversation, Lawrence was asked about working with actors who use different acting methods. She quickly pointed out that Method acting is not something she feels relaxed around. “I would be nervous to work with someone who’s Method [acting],” she said.
She explained that the idea of someone staying in character off camera would stress her out. For Lawrence, acting is something that starts when the camera rolls and ends when it stops. “Because I would have no idea how to talk to them, ’cause like, do I have to be in character? That would just make me nervous,” she added.
Method acting has long divided actors in Hollywood. Some performers fully immerse themselves in their roles and stay in character for long periods of time. Actors like Andrew Garfield and Jeremy Strong are often linked to this approach. At the same time, others in the industry have openly criticized it, including Brian Cox, who has called the style unnecessary.
Lawrence also spoke about how her own acting habits have changed over the years. She shared that earlier in her career, she would switch in and out of character without much preparation. That changed after working with Christian Bale on American Hustle.
She described watching Bale closely on set and noticing how focused he became right before filming started. “I noticed when the camera started rolling, and the crew started preparing, and it would be about 10 seconds to action, he would start getting ready,” she said. Seeing this made her rethink her own approach. “I saw that and was like, ‘That seems like a really good idea.’ So then I started to do that,” Lawrence explained.
The interview also touched on some of the strange skills she has learned for movie roles over the years. Lawrence joked about learning how to pick locks for Red Sparrow. She said she hasn’t needed to use that skill in real life, but added, “to know that I could is cool.” She also mentioned learning how to handle a falcon while filming Serena, calling it a very unusual experience.
Right now, Lawrence is receiving strong praise for her latest film, Die My Love. The psychological drama earned her a Golden Globe nomination and stars Robert Pattinson alongside her. Critics have described the role as one of her most intense performances in years, and the film is currently streaming on Mubi.
Her future schedule is already full. She is set to work with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio on the upcoming film What Happens at Night, expected in 2026. There are also rumors that she may return briefly as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is planned for release in late 2026.
Outside of acting, Lawrence continues to grow her career as a producer through her company Excellent Cadaver. She is also said to be developing a new comedy project with writer Kim Caramele.
Jennifer Lawrence’s view makes sense. Not every actor works the same way, and comfort on set matters. Great performances can come from many styles, not just one. What do you think? Is Method acting necessary, or does it make working together harder? Share your thoughts in the comments.
