HBO is getting ready to bring the Harry Potter books to the small screen with a new TV series set to premiere in early 2027.

Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and Max Content, told Deadline on January 30, that while they can’t confirm the exact month, viewers should expect the series at the start of next year. “I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027,” he said.

The show has been in development for years, and principal photography is taking place at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, UK. Over the past year, the series has been cast and written, with the premiere previously set generally for 2027.

Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout takes on Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will star as Hermione Granger. The adult cast includes Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. Warwick Davis will return as Professor Filius Flitwick, and Nick Frost is cast as Hagrid.

Harry Potter is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession. Mark Mylod, who directed The Menu, is directing multiple episodes and executive producing.

Other executive producers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman. Composer Hans Zimmer has signed on to create the music for the series. “The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team,” Zimmer said.

The young leads were chosen after a casting search involving more than 32,000 children across the UK and Ireland. Dominic McLaughlin recently made his stage debut in Macbeth with Ralph Fiennes, Arabella Stanton is a West End performer who appeared in Matilda The Musical and Starlight Express, and Alastair Stout will make his professional screen debut as Ron.

The first season of the series will have eight episodes, and HBO has already hinted at a second season to continue the story. With seasoned adult actors and new young stars, the series aims to capture the magic of the books while bringing a fresh perspective.

Fans are especially curious about Hans Zimmer’s musical take on the series, which will be a new sound for the Wizarding World. Will his score honor the originals or create a completely new experience? HBO and the producers hope to strike the right balance.
