Quentin Tarantino Explains Why He Will Never Make a Superhero Film
Quentin Tarantino has built a career on doing things his own way. From his first movies to his most recent work, his films always show how much he loves old-school cinema. You can see it in the way his scenes are shot, the music he uses, and the way his characters talk.
Even though he has explored many genres over the years, there is one type of movie he has zero interest in making. That is the superhero film. In his book Cinema Speculation, Tarantino openly shared his frustration with how popular superhero movies have become.
According to the book, he said he looks forward to a time when these movies are no longer dominating theaters. He also made it clear that he agrees with Martin Scorsese, who once said that these films feel more like theme parks than real cinema.
Scorsese has explained in past interviews that movies should be about people trying to connect emotionally and psychologically. He believes cinema should explore human behavior, not just focus on visual spectacle.
Despite these views, superhero films continue to break records. Movies like Avengers: Endgame have earned billions worldwide. During a 2022 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Tarantino admitted that if superhero movies had been this big when he was a kid in the 1980s, he probably would have loved them. He said he was a big comic book fan growing up.
Still, he explained that modern superhero films do not work for him. He said they depend too much on computer effects that are added long after filming is finished. For Tarantino, that takes away from the magic of making a movie.
He strongly believes that if something was not physically created and filmed on set, it does not fully count. He prefers practical effects that actors can see and react to in real time. He often talks about working closely with his effects team to build real objects, use makeup, and create moments that exist in front of the camera.
Outside of this debate, Tarantino has stayed busy. He recently wrote The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a follow-up story to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. While he did not direct the film, it stars Brad Pitt and Elizabeth Debicki and was directed by David Fincher. Production wrapped in January, according to industry reports.
Tarantino has also drawn attention for his blunt opinions. In January, he caused backlash after criticizing actor Paul Dano during a podcast appearance. Several actors, including George Clooney and Toni Collette, later spoke out in Dano’s defense.
For now, Tarantino is splitting his time between writing, running the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, and spending time with his family. He has said in past interviews that he wants to wait until his son is older before returning to a film set full-time.
Whether people agree with him or not, Tarantino has made it clear that superhero movies are not part of his future. His focus remains on practical filmmaking and the kind of cinema that feels real, personal, and human.
