Why Whoopi Goldberg Says Relationships Are Not for Her Anymore
Whoopi Goldberg has never been shy about living life her own way, and that includes staying single. At 70, the actress and TV host says she feels completely at ease on her own and has no plans to change that.
In a recent conversation with playwright Jeremy O. Harris for Interview magazine, Goldberg spoke openly about why she does not want a long-term partner. When the topic came up, she made it clear that other people’s expectations do not matter to her. As she put it, I don’t give a f— what you want, making her feelings impossible to misunderstand.
Goldberg explained that many people mix up being alone with being lonely. To her, the two are very different things. She said society often treats being single like a flaw, as if something must be missing. She does not agree with that idea at all.
For Goldberg, being on her own means freedom. She talked about how much she enjoys making small choices without having to compromise. Sometimes she just wants to go out, eat pasta, and not explain herself to anyone. Even simple things like choosing between red and white wine feel easier when she only has to think about herself.
This way of thinking did not come out of nowhere. Goldberg has been married three times before and has said for years that marriage never quite fit her. She once described herself as a round peg trying to fit into a square hole. Living with someone else simply was not right for her.
She also admitted in the Interview feature that relationships require a level of focus she does not want to give. With a daughter, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren, she feels her emotional energy is already spoken for. Adding a romantic partner to that mix does not appeal to her.
Despite being single, Goldberg’s life is anything but quiet. As of early February, she remains a regular presence on daytime TV as a co-host on The View. At the same time, her acting career is picking up speed again.
She is set to appear in the Amazon Prime Video series Anansi Boys, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, where she plays Bird Woman. She also recently filmed a guest role on the Italian soap opera Un Posto al Sole, simply because she felt like trying something different.
There is also talk of a science fiction film called Phoenix, which is rumored to be heading into production for a release later this year. Reports suggest Goldberg may play a tough lunar colony veteran, another example of how easily she moves between genres.
