Hollywood Pushes Forward With a New Charlie’s Angels Movie Behind the Scenes
Sony may be ready to roll the dice on Charlie’s Angels once again. A new version of the franchise is now in very early development, according to industry reports, though the studio has not officially confirmed anything yet.
The information comes from industry insiders and early trade reporting, which say Sony is quietly exploring another take on the long-running brand. One familiar name is already tied to the project. Drew Barrymore is reportedly involved through her company Flower Films, which helped shape the popular early 2000s movies.
This would be a full-circle moment for Barrymore, who starred in and produced the hit films released by Columbia Pictures more than two decades ago. Those movies played a big role in turning Charlie’s Angels into a major box office brand again after its TV roots.
The franchise began as a television series on ABC in 1976. The show ran for five seasons and quickly became a cultural hit. It starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith as private investigators working for the Townsend Agency.
Their boss, Charlie Townsend, was never seen and only heard, while Bosley acted as their go-between. The series was produced by Aaron Spelling, who became one of the most powerful names in television because of its success.
Charlie’s Angels hit a new high point in 2000 when Sony released a feature film directed by McG. That movie starred Barrymore alongside Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. It earned $264.1 million worldwide during its original run, which would be close to $493 million today when adjusted for inflation. A sequel titled Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle followed in 2003.
Later attempts to keep the franchise going had mixed results. A 2011 TV reboot was canceled after just seven episodes. In 2019, Elizabeth Banks directed a new film starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. That movie expanded the Angels into a global spy network, but it failed to gain traction with audiences and underperformed at the box office.
This new project is being treated as a fresh start. The script is being written by Pete Chiarelli, according to reports. Chiarelli first broke out with the Disney romantic comedy The Proposal and later worked on Now You See Me 2 and Crazy Rich Asians. He also helped develop the story for GOAT, a new animated film from Sony Pictures Animation produced by Stephen Curry, which is now releasing in theaters.
There is no casting news yet, and it is unclear if Barrymore would appear on screen or stay behind the scenes as a producer. Sony has declined to comment on the project so far, which is typical for films at such an early stage.
Outside of the franchise, Barrymore remains busy hosting her daytime talk show and is preparing to turn 51 later this month. She is also attached to a new project called Influenced, which includes Gwyneth Paltrow among its cast.
Elizabeth Banks is currently promoting her upcoming Peacock series The Miniature Wife, set to premiere in April. Kristen Stewart has also been in the spotlight recently after releasing her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water.
For now, the future of Charlie’s Angels is still taking shape. But with familiar names returning and Sony once again testing the waters, the Angels may soon be ready for another mission.
