Timothée Chalamet Admits He Thought Matthew McConaughey Might Kiss Austin Butler in a Resurfaced Video
Timothée Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey recently showed that their friendship, which began on the set of Interstellar in 2014, is still going strong. The two actors appeared at a town hall event hosted by Variety and CNN at the University of Texas at Austin, where they talked about everything from acting to personal quirks in a lighthearted and funny conversation.
The discussion got especially entertaining when an audience member asked who has the weirder daily routine. Chalamet immediately pointed to McConaughey, but the Oscar winner fired back, saying that Timothée always seems to notice his scent.
He says I always smell good, McConaughey joked, and Chalamet agreed, adding that the veteran actor smells amazing. This compliment led Chalamet to talk about a type of intense presence that both McConaughey and Austin Butler share.
Matthew and Austin could talk to you two inches closer than you’re normally used to someone talking to you — but they both do it, Chalamet explained. He described it as a mental “tug-of-war” where both actors lean in extremely close.
I was like, “They’re gonna do it! They’re gonna kiss!”, he added, laughing. Chalamet admitted he doesn’t have that kind of “alpha” energy himself. If I was talking to you [that close], you’d be like, “Yo, get the f*** away from me,” he joked.

The town hall was a reminder of the bond between the two actors, who first met when Chalamet played a teenage version of McConaughey’s son in Interstellar. Since then, both have risen to the top of Hollywood. Chalamet recently starred in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme and is preparing for the theatrical release of Dune: Part Three in December alongside Zendaya and Florence Pugh.
McConaughey has also been busy. He recently wrapped the crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, directed by Andrew Patterson and co-starring Kurt Russell and Cole Sprouse. The film received near-perfect reviews on the festival circuit and will release in theaters on August 21. Beyond acting, McConaughey continues his work as a professor and cultural ambassador at the University of Texas.
The event gave fans a chance to see the playful chemistry between the two stars. Whether joking about personal space or discussing Hollywood, it was clear that the Interstellar duo’s friendship is built on respect and humor.
