Timothée Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey recently reunited for a heartfelt and revealing conversation that spanned the depths of their decade-long friendship. During the Variety and CNN town hall at the University of Texas, Chalamet reflected on the formative lessons he learned from McConaughey while filming the sci-fi masterpiece Interstellar.

One of the most poignant moments of the discussion centered on Chalamet’s early days as a young actor trying to find his footing among industry titans. He recalled a specific instance where his lack of preparation was met with a firm but life-changing correction from McConaughey regarding the technical details of their on-screen farm.

I remember coming to set on “Interstellar” and you saying to me, “How does that tractor work?” I had no clue, Chalamet admitted to the crowd. McConaughey’s response was a stern reminder of the commitment required for the craft, telling him, You should know. If you were on this farm, you would know.

Chalamet confessed that he initially thought it was a joke, but McConaughey doubled down, forcing the young star to realize that authenticity is built on the smallest details. I went home that night and printed a bunch of research. I knocked on your trailer door. I was proud to show it, Chalamet added, noting how much that mentorship meant to him.

The conversation then took a more serious turn as Chalamet opened up about the times his legitimacy as an actor was questioned by others in the industry. He recalled a frustrating encounter with an unnamed peer who looked down upon his lack of formal schooling.

I had an actor do that to me once. No names, but the guy was a punk, Chalamet shared, visibly passionate about the memory. The individual had questioned which conservatory Chalamet attended, and upon hearing he hadn’t gone to one, dismissed his entire career by saying, Well, you haven’t trained as an actor then.

This elitism was a sharp contrast to the supportive, risk-taking environment McConaughey fostered on their sets. McConaughey offered a piece of wisdom in response, suggesting that perfection is often the enemy of true artistic growth.

In the creative arts, it’s not about being right. If you’re right too often, you’re not taking enough risk, McConaughey explained. He encouraged Chalamet to lean into the vulnerability of the job, noting that being a clown or feeling foolish is often where the most powerful light source is found.

Chalamet, who has now seen Interstellar nearly two dozen times, also shared a touching story about a surprise birthday screening arranged by his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner. Though he was initially grumpy about the long drive, his mood shifted instantly when he realized he was about to watch his favorite film in IMAX.

Outside of these nostalgic reflections, Chalamet is currently one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, with 2026 marking several major milestones. He recently earned critical acclaim for the A24 film Marty Supreme and is currently preparing for the global release of Dune: Part Three in December.

Matthew McConaughey is also enjoying a prolific year, with his new thriller The Rivals of Amziah King scheduled for an August 2026 release. He continues to balance his film career with his philanthropic efforts and his role as a professor of practice at UT Austin.

Both actors remain symbols of how different paths can lead to the same heights of cinematic excellence. Whether through formal training or “learning how the tractor works” on a Christopher Nolan set, they have both proven that the only true requirement for acting is a willingness to be seen.
