The BAFTA Film Awards have ended, but fans are still talking about some of the most memorable moments from the night. One of the biggest laughs came when actor Paul Mescal got caught on his phone by host Alan Cumming. Mescal, who was nominated for his role in the historical drama Hamnet, didn’t notice Cumming as he was scrolling during the show.

When Cumming saw him looking down, he called out, “Paul, Paul, oh, he is on his phone!” Mescal looked up, clearly embarrassed, as Cumming added with a grin, “You were supposed to do the gag, don’t you worry!” The audience erupted with laughter while Mescal laughed and covered his face in disbelief.

The Irish star wasn’t the only one feeling the heat from Cumming’s jokes. Kylie Jenner, who was at the ceremony supporting her boyfriend Timothée Chalamet, also found herself in an awkward spot.

Cumming approached them with a basket of traditional British snacks and offered Jenner a packet of Scampi Fries before joking, “Have you ever had your gums around a giant Jamie Dodger?” Jenner politely accepted the biscuit and mouthed a “Thank you”, but her unimpressed expression quickly went viral online. Chalamet, sitting next to her, managed a nervous smile as Cumming moved on.

The night brought some real surprises as well. Chalamet, widely expected to win Best Actor for his role in Marty Supreme, lost to British actor Robert Aramayo for his performance in I Swear. The win was a huge upset, beating not only Chalamet but also Leonardo DiCaprio.

Aramayo’s parents were seen celebrating with tears in their eyes, and he admitted during his speech, “I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award,” before praising his fellow nominees. He also highlighted advice from Ethan Hawke, recalling a lecture on protecting your instrument and avoiding self-destructive behaviors that had influenced him deeply.

Irish talent also made waves on the night. Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her role as Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet. Critics have praised her performance all season, and the award cemented her status as one of modern cinema’s most impressive leading ladies.

Despite the jokes and unexpected losses, Mescal continues to be one of the industry’s most in-demand actors after his breakout in Normal People. His mix of charm and vulnerability was on full display during the BAFTAs, even if it included a little phone mishap.
