Robert de Niro Raises Concerns About Donald Trump and the Direction of the Nation
Robert De Niro spoke openly and emotionally about politics during a recent podcast interview, and his words quickly caught attention online. The comments came from his appearance on the podcast The Best People with Nicolle Wallace, which aired on February 23.
According to the podcast episode, De Niro set aside his usual tough public image and spoke as a worried citizen. He shared strong feelings about where he believes the country is headed and made it clear he feels a deep sense of urgency. As he talked, his voice became shaky, and he appeared close to tears.
During the conversation, De Niro criticized President Donald Trump and described the current state of the country in blunt terms. The story is our country, and Trump is destroying it, he said. He went on to add that the situation is sick and f**ed up* and warned that the damage could become permanent if people do not act.
He told Wallace that Americans cannot sit back and hope things improve on their own. He described Trump as the enemy of this country and said the situation is simple and serious. According to De Niro, people need to unite and focus on removing harmful leadership so the country can move forward again.
Throughout the interview, De Niro repeated his call for action. People have to resist, resist, resist, resist, resist, he said, stressing that peaceful but consistent resistance is necessary. He explained that even if leadership changes, the mindset behind it could still remain and cause harm.
He compared the moment to past movements in American history, pointing to the Vietnam War era. De Niro said large public protests helped shift the country back then and believes the same kind of energy is needed now. In his view, change only happens when people speak up together in large numbers.
Later in the episode, Wallace brought up De Niro’s Oscar speech for Raging Bull in 1981 and noted how he has often spoken about supporting others. When asked why that idea still matters to him, De Niro became emotional again. You have to lift people up, he said. You can’t divide people because you can’t win that way.
He described the current level of division in the country as dangerous and said that tearing people apart only leads to failure. De Niro also suggested that the president may not fully understand the harm being done, but insisted that the damage is real either way.
Near the end of the interview, he said that because the country is being torn down, it is now up to everyday people to protect it. This interview follows De Niro’s involvement in the No Kings movement.
Outside of politics, De Niro remains busy with his acting career. He is currently starring in the Netflix limited series Zero Day, where he plays a former president pulled back into action after a global cyberattack. He is also preparing for the release of the thriller The Whisper Man, expected to arrive later this year.
